Greetings! I hope each of you is doing well. At our last online meeting, on September 2, we had an excellent presentation by John Buchanan on the war in the South and his Road to Charleston book. A total of 48 persons signed up and 38 attended.
We have another great presentation coming up by Michael Harris on the Battle of Germantown during the Philadelphia Campaign of 1777.
Our regularly-scheduled meeting the first Wednesday of October will be an online meeting, Wednesday, October 7, at 7 p.m., with author Michael Harris presenting.
Please let me know by responding to this email christian.mcburney@arentfox.com if you would like to attend the online Zoom meeting presentation by Michael Harris on Wednesday, October 7, at 7 p.m. I will then email you a Zoom link to the meeting on the day of the meeting. (If you have been resisting Zoom meetings, please reconsider! It may be a large part of the future.)
Michael Harris’s Germantown is the first complete study to merge the strategic, political, and tactical history of this complex operation and important set-piece battle into a single compelling account. Following up on his award-winning Brandywine, Harris’s sweeping prose relies almost exclusively on original archival research and a deep personal knowledge of the terrain. Complete with original maps, numerous illustrations, and modern photos, and told largely through the words of those who fought there, Germantown: A Military History of the Battle for the Control of Philadelphia, October 4, 1777 (Savas Beatie, 2020) is sure to please the most discriminating reader and assume its place as one of the finest military studies of its kind. The book is scheduled for release on September 22, 2020.
Michael C. Harris is a graduate of the University of Mary Washington and the American Military University. He has worked for the National Park Service in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Fort Mott State Park in New Jersey, and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission at Brandywine Battlefield. He conducted tours and staff rides of many of the east coast battlefields. Michael is certified in secondary education and currently teaches in the Philadelphia region. He lives in Pennsylvania with his wife, Michelle, and son, Nathanael. His first book, Brandywine, was awarded The American Revolution Round Table of Richmond book award in 2014.
Thanks to Lorna Hainesworth for the following Battle of Brooklyn link from the Maryland Archives. Originally presented on the 244th anniversary date (8/27/2020) of the battle, the link is still accessible (but my Explorer browser could not open it)
