Recommendation: The Homes of Charles Lee, Horatio Gates and Adam Stephen
in West Virginia, a Map Showing Their Locations
You may recall that in one of
my alerts, I informed you about a nice day trip, especially in the Fall, to
visit the former houses of Rev War major generals Charles Lee (Prato Rio),
Horatio Gates (Traveler’s Rest), and Adam Stephen. Lorna Hainesworth took
the trip on June 24 and as a result created this wonderful map below, with the
addresses (I also attach it to this email). She added in an email message
to me: “Today I visited Prato Rio, Traveler’s Rest and the Adam Stephen
house in Martinsburg. I didn't understand that "The Bower" was
a separate place, but I did get pictures of the historical sign. I was
told by the president of the Friends of the Adam Stephens house that the
original hunting lodge is not really visible having been subsumed into the
current house, which is in the hands of several family members and not in good
shape interior-wise, Still, I wish I had realized there were two
different Adam Stephen houses.”
